How to Calculate Coefficient of Variation Using Microsoft Excel?
COV calculation in Excel is not like other functions, such as Mean, Mode, standard deviation, and many more, which can be done using a simple one-line function. For this, you need a proper step-by-step procedure. Read forward to understand this process.
Step-by-step process
First of all, we need data to work with. For this tutorial, we’ll assume the following example:
Example:
If the data of annual returns (in %) for two investments over 5 years.

Then calculate the COV of both investments using Microsoft Excel and show which one has low risk.
Step 1: Set up the Data
- Open the Excel sheet and put the years in Column A.
- Investment A returns in column B (B2:B6)
- Investment B returns in Column C (C2:C6)
Step 2: Calculate the Mean
| Keep in Mind:To use any Excel formula for calculation, you keep one thing in mind, the “=” symbol must be used before applying any formula (e.g, = AVERAGE ()), otherwise Excel shows the Error. |
After setting up the data, the next step is to calculate the mean (average) for finding the COV of any dataset. For the mean calculation, use the Average function of Excel. Look steps below for this:
- Enter the Average (B2:B6) function in Cell B7 to calculate the mean for investment A.
- Type the same function for investment B from C2: C6 in cell C7.
- When you have entered, click on the Enter button on the Keyboard to calculate the mean.
Step 3: Now, calculate the standard deviation for both investments.
- Enter the “=STDEV. P” Excel function in the B8 cell to find the A population standard deviation.
- Fill the C8 with the “= STDEV.P” formula in investment B's and find the standard deviation.
Step 4: Find the Coefficient of Variation.
Now we have the mean and standard deviation in hand. So, let's find out the coefficient of variation of both investments.
- Write the formula B8/B7 in B9 to find the coefficient of variation for investment A.
- Put the Excel equation C8/ C7 to calculate COV for investment B.
Step 5: Now, COV in percentage.
The coefficient of variation is mostly represented in percentage form. To show in percentage, we can apply two methods:
- Select B9 and C9 → Right-click → Format Cells → Percentage → OK (Here we’ll apply this).
- Multiply the result by 100, which also shows the CV in percentage.
After applying this, we’ll get the coefficient of variation in percentage.
Interpretation:
For results interpretation, first, know about the general result table.

| Above 40% | High variability (risky investment) |
According to this general interpretation, our example interpretation will be:
- Investment “A” CV ≈ 6.32%
- Investment “B” CV ≈ 31.62%
After seeing this, we concluded that Investment A has lower risk relative to its return.
